Hot take: I stopped buying expensive waterproofing spray for my tent

Honestly, I got tired of paying $25 a can for that stuff that never seemed to last. After a wet trip to the Blue Ridge, I tried a trick from an old hiker: a mix of silicone sealant and mineral spirits brushed on the rainfly. It held up through a solid week of rain in Oregon. Anyone else got a cheap fix that actually works?

That silicone trick can work, but it adds a lot of permanent weight and makes the fabric stiff. I just re-up with a spray can every other season because it keeps the breathability. The cheap fixes often wreck the technical parts of the gear.

Wait, what spray do you use? I tried a couple and they either wore off fast or left weird spots.
