Just found out that old Canon AE-1 foam seals turn into sticky goo after 30 years
Was cleaning out a basket case AE-1 I picked up from a garage sale and the mirror foam had basically melted into a black sludge that gummed up the whole mechanism, has anyone else dealt with this mess and found a decent solvent that doesn't eat the paint?
Rubbing alcohol with a q-tip works decent for softening the gunk without damaging the paint - just go slow and gentle. Your mileage may vary depending on how much sludge has already spread, but I've found it's way safer than acetone or lighter fluid. Take this with a grain of salt though, because I've also heard some people swear by lighter fluid for the same job.
