Had a sit down with an old cabinetmaker yesterday that shook me up
He looked at my cope and stick joints and said I make them too tight. I always thought a hairline gap was a sin but he showed me his 20 year old job where the doors still move perfect. Said wood needs room to breathe especially in a humid climate like ours in Atlanta. Has anyone else been told to back off on tight joints?

I read an article from a guy up in Maine who does high end furniture, and he said the same thing. He called it "seasonal breathing" and mentioned how a perfectly tight joint in winter will crack in the summer humidity. Made me think about all my kitchen cabinets I installed last year. Might have to go check on them now.

That "seasonal breathing" thing is real, I watched a butcher block countertop I made split right down the middle last August.
