I finally saw the danger of cheap cables at a Denver coffee shop

I was waiting for my latte and watched a guy's phone go from 40% to dead in 10 seconds because his frayed USB-C cable sparked and killed the port. Has anyone else seen a bad cable wreck a device in public like that, or am I just paranoid now about my own backups?
