Tried to fix the leaking sink trap with a $4 rubber boot and it popped off at 6am
The drain pipe under my kitchen sink had a crack near the joint so I skipped the real fix and wrapped one of those flexible rubber boot couplings around it. Felt solid when I tested it that night. Next morning my wife yells from the kitchen and there's an inch of standing water in the cabinet and the boot is hanging loose. Turns out I cranked both clamps on the same side of the fitting so it never sealed even, and it slipped off under pressure. What's the move here, do I just cut the pipe back and glue a real slip joint on or is there a clamp setup that actually holds?
Hoo boy, been there. My first plumbing "fix" involved a rubber boot too and I was so proud of myself until the cabinet turned into a swimming pool. Your problem is the clamps both being on one side, that lets the fitting walk right off the pipe once there's any pressure, so even a better clamp won't save you if it's placed wrong. But honestly, a cracked pipe right at the joint is not something a boot is meant to fix anyway, the crack will just keep spreading under there. Cut it back past the crack, glue on a real slip joint or coupling, and let the glue cure the full time on the can instead of testing it an hour later like I always want to. The $4 fix is tempting but the $12 fix plus an hour of your Saturday is the one that lets you sleep past 6am.
@valwest exactly what happened to me under my kitchen sink last spring, the boot slid off overnight and I found it at 7am. Cut back past the crack and used a slip coupling with the full cure time, and it's been dry for 8 months now.
