Shelled out $60 for a fancy stencil kit, just use a ruler now
Bought a geometric stencil pack last fall thinking it'd speed up my monthly spreads, but the plastic slid around and half the lines came out crooked. Anyone else find that basic tools beat the gimmicky stuff for layouts?

Did you tape the stencil down before you used it? I had the same sliding problem with a cheap set, but once I started using painter's tape on the corners, the lines came out clean enough that I stopped reaching for my ruler. Not gonna lie, the stencil still has limits, like it only has certain shapes that all start to look the same after a few pages. Ruler gives you more freedom to make the spread your own, but for quick boxes and circles, the stencil saves me maybe ten minutes. Guess it depends on whether you want speed or total control, what's your usual setup?
