Warning: I zip tied my front panel cables for 2 builds straight and the third one finally got a fan grille
I switched from zip ties to velcro straps on my last build in my garage and my front intake temps dropped 4C because the cables stopped blocking the lower fan. Anyone else notice their cable bundle was quietly choking airflow?
Man, I felt this one in my soul. My first two builds looked like a spider got into the zip tie bag and just went wild in there, cables crossing every which way and half of them sitting right in front of the bottom intake. I finally cleaned it up with velcro on build three and my GPU temps went down a few degrees, which made me feel dumb and happy at the same time. The worst part is you never notice it because the cables look "tidy" from the outside, but they're basically a wall blocking half your fan. Now I route everything behind the tray and keep the front as empty as I can. Lesson learned the hard way, same as you.
A buddy of mine had the same thing happen with his first ITX build, cables stuffed right up against the side intake like stuffing a turkey. He swore his temps were fine for months, then he rebuilt it with custom cables and dropped almost 8 degrees on the CPU. He still brings it up every time someone posts a build with cables everywhere, like he's some kind of airflow expert now. Funny how a few degrees turns us all into engineers.
