PSA: Clean cases vs dust monsters, is airflow overrated?

I read a post on here last night where a guy said his PC temps dropped 5c after he crammed more fans in a dusty case, and it got me thinking. On the flip side, I spent 3 hours cleaning my buddy's rig that looked like a lint trap and his temps barely budged. So which matters more for thermals - a spotless interior or just throwing high static pressure fans at the problem? Anyone else have a specific build where one clearly beat the other?

Oh man, I feel like I'm the poster child for this debate since my rig runs 5c hotter than it should just because I'm too lazy to dust for six months straight. Clean air flow is great in theory but my PC is basically a vacuum cleaner with a side of gaming at this point. It's probably a combo thing but I'm betting most of us get away with dirty cases more than we admit.

Yeah @sandra715 nailed it with that "vacuum cleaner with a side of gaming" line, that's basically my setup too. I think most of us just get lazy and hope the fans make up for it, but a clean case feels like a fresh start even if the temps don't change much.
