Chose the $210 crown over the $1,400 implant last April and the gap is already bugging me
My dentist in Boise gave me two options for a cracked molar last April: a crown for about $210 after insurance, or pull it and do an implant for $1,400 out of pocket. I went with the crown since it was way cheaper and I was trying to knock down my credit card that spring. Six months later the crown popped loose while I was eating a bagel, and now I'm looking at a root canal on top of a replacement crown. If your dentist offers a crown on a tooth that's already had work done, ask how long it's actually expected to hold up. Has anyone else had a crown fail this fast, and did you just keep replacing it or switch to the implant?
A bagel popping a crown off six months in sounds more like the crown was seated wrong or the tooth was already cracked worse than they thought, not that crowns are a bad deal in general. Mine from 2019 is still going fine and it was around $250 after insurance, so one bad one does not mean you should have dropped $1,400. Root canals and crowns are pretty normal for a molar that has been drilled on, so I would get a second look before you blame the cheaper choice.
