Vent: Took me 11 days to get a $9 hostel refund from a place in Lisbon
Booked 3 nights at a hostel near Rossio Square in Lisbon back in March, paid $47 upfront, then my flight got moved and I had to cancel 5 days out. The listing said free cancellation but the refund never showed, so I called, emailed, filed a chargeback, and messaged them on 2 different apps, and the whole thing finally landed on day 11 after I sent screenshots of their own policy page. What is the fastest way you have gotten a hostel or budget hotel to actually hand back your money without waiting almost 2 weeks?
Man, the trick nobody mentions is your card issuer's dispute portal, not the hostel. I skip calling and emailing the place and go straight to my bank's app, open a dispute, and upload the listing's cancellation policy plus my cancel confirmation. Banks have rules where the merchant has a set number of days to answer the claim or you win by default. Hostels hate that because it costs them a fee on top of the refund. Last time I did this on a 30 euro room in Porto, the money was back in 4 days.
