Overheard a guy at the Denver airport say his 'secret' was asking about empty seats at the gate

Last Tuesday I was waiting for a delayed flight out of DIA and this older dude was telling his buddy how he always walks up to the desk agent and asks if any exit row or aisle seats opened up, no upgrade talk, just a polite question. He said he's done it on maybe 20 flights in the past year and got moved to more legroom at least 8 times, completely free. I tried it on my next connection to Phoenix and the agent actually found me a bulkhead seat with nobody next to me. Guess it helps if you're flying solo and look flexible, but has anyone else had luck with this or do the agents mostly just brush you off?
