My buddy in Bangkok called my travel style 'luxury on a budget' and it stung

He pointed out I was spending $40 a night on a 'cheap' private room when the hostel dorm next door was $8 and just as clean. I switched to dorms for my last week in Thailand and saved over $200, which paid for a cooking class and a flight to Chiang Mai. Anyone else have a friend give them a reality check that actually worked?

Switching to a dorm to save money sounds smart, but man, that $40 for a private room is a sanity tax. After a long day of travel, having your own space is worth every penny.

Why not just stay home if you're gonna cheap out on everything?
