Hostel loyalty programs are a trap, I found out the hard way

Tbh I thought joining that HostelPass scheme in Barcelona last month was a smart move. Paid $25 for the membership because they promised a free night after 5 stays. Then I got double booked at their affiliate place in Lisbon and they told me it didn't count since I booked through a third party site. The fine print was buried in their app, so now I just use the free walking tours and book direct with smaller guesthouses. Has anyone else had a loyalty program screw them over on a trip?
