DAE check the price of the same hostel on the app vs at the front desk?

I was in Lisbon last month and the hostel app wanted 22 euros a night, but when I walked in and asked, the guy gave me the same bed for 15 cash. He said the booking sites take a cut so they keep a few rooms off the app for walk-ins. Has anyone else scored a cheaper room just by showing up?
