Confused by carry-on size limits on budget airlines

I booked a budget flight thinking I got a great deal. At check-in, they said my carry-on was too big by their metal frame. I had to pay an extra fee that ate up my savings. My bag fit fine on other airlines before. Why do these rules vary so much between companies? What tricks do you have for checking bag size ahead of time? Has this happened to anyone else here?

Yeah, that metal frame trick gets me too. It's just like how companies sneak in extra charges everywhere, like with streaming services. I double check the airline's size guide with a tape measure before I pack now.

Ugh, that metal frame thing is such a trap. I had a buddy who brought a backpack that looked fine, but they made him stuff it in the sizer and it bulged out. He ended up having to wear three jackets just to get it on the plane.

That metal frame thing isn't a trick, it's just a bad feature like @stella_dixon said.
