My $200 Miata's engine bay caught fire on the highway last month

I was driving home from a junkyard run near Dayton, Ohio, with a box of parts in the passenger seat. Suddenly, I smelled burning plastic and saw smoke coming from under the hood. I pulled over, popped it open, and saw a small flame on a cracked fuel line spraying onto the hot exhaust. I grabbed my half-empty water bottle and dumped it on the line, which put it out but left me stranded. Has anyone else had to deal with a roadside fire, and what's the best cheap fix for old rubber fuel lines?

That water bottle trick worked out okay this time, but gasoline fires don't mix with water. A small fire extinguisher is a good thing to keep in the car. For the lines, just get some proper fuel injection hose and new clamps, it's not expensive.

Water on a fuel fire is a bad idea, man.
