Chose a $500 Miata with rust over a clean $1500 one, did I mess up?

I went with the cheaper one thinking I could patch the rockers myself but after 4 weekends of cutting and welding I'm only halfway done and wondering if the extra grand would have saved me the headache, anyone else been in this spot?

Four weekends and only halfway done? Man, that is rough. I bought a $600 Jeep Cherokee once that looked like it just needed a fender patch and ended up finding the whole floor pan was Swiss cheese. Sometimes that extra money upfront saves you from living under the car for a month.

I read something the other day about how those old Chrysler products from the 90s were basically built to rust from the inside out. Sounds like you found a textbook example of that. lol. Hope you got some good stories out of it at least.
