Buddy at a junkyard in Phoenix showed me how to rebuild a transmission for under $200
I was pulling a starter off a 94 Civic when this older guy walks up and starts talking about how he rebuilt his own 4L60E for just 180 bucks using a basic rebuild kit and a YouTube video. He said most people waste money on new transmissions when the old ones just need new seals and clutches. Has anyone else tried rebuilding a transmission on a tight budget? How did it go?

Man that is wild. $180 for a full rebuild? I mean I get the logic, the hard parts are usually still good unless you grenaded it. But did he mention what kind of shape the hard parts were in? Like the drums and planetaries, those can be pretty beat after high miles and still look fine until you torque them up. Ive seen guys skip replacing bushings too and end up with low pressure and burnt clutches a few thousand miles later. What did he say about the valve body? Did he rebuild that too or just slap it back in? Because a sticky valve will kill a fresh rebuild just as fast as worn clutches will.
