Vent: My apartment in Austin had the worst builder-grade light fixtures

I was at a thrift store on Burnet Road and saw a set of three glass pendant shades for $15 total. I swapped them onto my existing kitchen fixture in about an hour, and it completely changed the room's vibe for almost no money. Has anyone else tried just changing the shades instead of the whole fixture? What did you use?

Builder-grade stuff is the worst, it's like they want your place to look sad. Good find on Burnet Road, that place can be a goldmine. Swapping just the shades is the secret cheat code for renters and lazy homeowners alike. My old place had these awful brass boob lights, and some cheap drum shades from a hardware store made them almost look decent. It's shocking how much of a difference it makes for basically no effort. The builders really bank on us not figuring out this simple trick.

That's a solid way to upgrade on a budget. Saw a blog post where someone did the same with cheap paper lanterns for a rental. Swapping just the shades can totally work if the base fixture is still good.
