Painted one accent wall with leftover house paint, then realized the lighting made it look like a bruise

I spent a Tuesday evening rolling that free sample over my living room wall and didn't notice until dusk that the warm bulb turned the gray into this weird purple, so has anyone else been burned by using paint meant for a different room and how do you test for lighting before committing?

The whole thing about color is that it never shows its true face until the actual light hits it, and that's true for so much more than paint. Bought a shirt online once that looked perfect in the photos, but under my kitchen lights it went all greenish and I never wore it again. Same deal with picking out a couch at the store, it looked great under those bright showroom bulbs, but in my dim living room it just sucked all the warmth out of the space. This is just part of a bigger pattern where we make choices based on one set of conditions and then act surprised when the real world changes everything. For paint, the trick is to grab a few sample cards or even just paint big swatches on cardboard and leave them in the room at different times of day, from morning sun to lamp light at night. Also, that bruise thing is a classic result of warm bulbs pulling out the undertones in gray, so try a cooler bulb or a light that's more neutral before you redo the whole wall.
