Changed my mind about those expensive 'rare' philodendron cuttings online

I saw a listing for a 'mint variegated' philodendron gloriosum cutting for $85. The seller had great photos, so I bought it. The cutting arrived with one tiny leaf that had a single pale spot, and it rotted within a week despite my sterile setup. I'm out the cash and have nothing to show for it. Has anyone actually had luck with these high-priced, hype-driven cuttings, or is it mostly a gamble?

You mentioned a sterile setup, but have you considered the seller's humidity? That cutting was probably in a super humid prop box, and going to normal home air is a massive shock. It's not just about rot, it's about the plant going into shock from the change.

Nah, that's giving sellers too much credit lol. Most just ship stuff in a baggie, it's not some perfect lab condition. Plants deal with way worse outside all the time.

The prop box humidity point is actually huge. I saw a video where a guy measured his at 95% constantly. My house sits around 40%. That's a crazy drop for a plant to handle in two days.
