Mr. Darcy's first proposal shows her pride was the real issue, not just money. Reducing it to economics misses Austen's point about character.

Totally agree that missing Austen's point about character happens all the time. Like when someone says a breakup was only about cash. But really, it's often about pride or hurt feelings. You see this at jobs too, blaming pay instead of rude managers. Making everything about money skips the real human stuff. Austen saw that, and we still do it now.
