Took me 45 minutes to find the right debate format for my group

So I run a small book club with 6 people from my neighborhood in Austin. We had a huge fight last month over whether the main character in our last read was actually a bad person or just misjudged. I figured we could just talk it out like normal but people kept talking over each other. I spent 45 minutes searching online for a structured debate format that would work for book discussions. Finally found a simple pro vs con setup where each person gets 3 minutes to argue one side. It actually worked and now we use it every meeting. Has anyone else tried a formal debate setup in their group or do you just let things get chaotic?
