The book club rule about spoilers backfired on us hard
My club voted 8 to 2 to ban all spoiler talk before meetings last spring, and it wrecked our discussion of The Silent Patient. Half the room had finished it and the other half kept fishing for hints, so nobody could talk about the twist without walking on eggshells. I argued a 10 minute spoiler free section then open floodgates, but they wanted strict. We lost 3 regulars by July because the meetings felt like a test, not a chat. Anyone else have a spoiler policy that ruined a good debate?

A hard rule like that turns book club into homework. The whole fun is yelling about the twist with people who get it. Our club does spoiler talk only in the last 20 minutes and it works fine. People who aren't done just sit and listen or jump in when they finish. Banning it outright just makes everyone tip toe around the best part.
