The $120 annotated edition that wrecked my book club night

I bought the fancy annotated version of a classic novel for our group's monthly pick. Big mistake. The footnotes took up half each page and we spent the whole meeting arguing over the editor's notes instead of the actual story. Two members said it felt like homework. The regular paperback was $14. Has anyone else been burned by a 'deluxe' edition that killed the discussion?
