Stopped forcing everyone to read the same classics after a debate at my local library

Last month at our book club meeting in Portland, someone brought up that they hated every 'important' book we picked for three months straight. I realized we had 12 members but only 2 people actually liked the literary fiction I kept choosing. Now I let each person suggest a book and we vote with a simple yes or no. Has anyone else tried letting the group pick books more freely instead of one person deciding?

Did you guys run into any fights when someone's pick got voted down? I'm curious how you handle the person whose book gets like 3 yeses and 9 nos, do they just tough it out or do they skip that month. We tried a similar voting system but it turned into a popularity contest where the quiet members never got their books picked. Have you noticed any patterns in what gets voted in versus what gets rejected?

We started letting the person who got rejected pick the next month automatically no matter what, so nobody feels totally shut out. It stopped the hurt feelings and actually got the quiet folks to speak up more.
