My book club's clash over a hero or villain debate

We read a book where the main guy does some shady things to help his family. Half my club called him a brave soul, the other half said he was just selfish. It got pretty loud with people bringing up their own stories. How can one character cause such a split? I saw that where you come from really affects what you see in a story. One friend who grew up poor said she got his choices, while others called him wrong. These talks make me think harder about what I read, and I love that.

Book club fights get intense when morals are blurry. Your poor friend seeing his side makes total sense - when you've struggled, survival moves hit different. Meanwhile, folks with stable lives might only see the bad acts without the why. Those loud talks are lowkey the best part of reading, they force you to question your own takes. I've been in similar debates where my view shifted after hearing someone's lived experience. Glad your club goes deep, even if it gets heated.

Ever been in a debate where you're lowkey rooting for the bad guy? My book club still hasn't forgiven me for siding with the scam artist... survival instincts, I guess.

Survival moves hit different" is a wild way to put it. That's just saying bad stuff is okay.
