Book club fight over the ending of The Great Gatsby got real heated last Tuesday

We were at Carol's house in Oak Park and two people almost walked out because they disagreed whether Gatsby was a tragic hero or just a rich creep... I had to grab a beer and change the subject before things got ugly. Has anyone else had a debate ruin their whole book club vibe?

Actually Gatsby grew up on a farm in Minnesota, not from nothing.

That whole debate is tired. Gatsby is obviously a tragic hero if you actually read the book with your eyes open. Anyone who calls him just a rich creep missed the whole point about the American Dream and class. The guy built himself up from nothing for a woman who was never going to pick him. That's sad and pathetic but also kind of noble in a messed up way. Your book club people need to chill and accept that stories can have complicated characters.
