Went from hating flux core to running it daily, took a bad weld to change my mind

Honestly, I used to trash flux core every chance I got. Said it was for guys who couldn't run duel shield or just lazy hobbyists. Then last spring on a job in Gary, Indiana, I had to patch a cracked hopper in 20 mph wind. My MIG setup kept losing gas, so the foreman handed me an old Lincoln with flux core wire and said 'just burn it in.' Tried one pass, figured it'd look like bird crap, but it laid down smooth and held through a full shift. Spent the next 2 weeks practicing with different settings on scrap plate, and now I keep a flux core rig in my truck for outdoor repair work. The slag cleanup still annoys me, but the fact I can weld in gusts without a windbreak changed everything. Has anyone else flipped on a process they swore they'd never use again, and what pushed you over? Maybe now I'll try that spray transfer setup I've been dodging.
