Watched a guy roll a tube sheet in 20 minutes at the shop in Beaumont and changed my mind on hydraulic expanders
Stopped by a buddy's shop in Beaumont last month to drop off some plate and watched an old timer roll a tube sheet by hand with a pneumatic roller, no hydraulic expander in sight. I always figured you needed the fancy setup to get a good seal on a heat exchanger, but he had every tube seated in about 20 minutes flat and his torque pattern was dead even. He said the hydraulic units are great for big runs but for a one-off job he'd rather feel the roller bite than trust a gauge. I've been pricing expanders for months and now I'm not so sure I need one. Anybody here still roll tubes by feel or did everyone switch over?
