Can we talk about how nobody wraps their flanges right anymore?

I was on a job up in Gary last Tuesday and had to redo three flanges because the new guy just slapped gaskets on without even checking the surface. Old timers used to hit them with a file and a rag, now everyone's in a rush. I get that time is money but leaks cost more. Anyone else see this getting worse?

Read an article in one of the trade mags about how modern gasket materials can fool you into thinking the surface is clean... they just sit on top of the dirt and then blow out a week later. My dad taught me to run a thumbnail across the flange face first, if it catches at all you gotta dress it. Seen way too many young guys skip that step and end up with a call back at 2 AM.

Oh come on, that thumbnail trick is just old school paranoia. If you prep the flange right with a proper solvent and a good rag, there's no dirt left to catch on, and modern gaskets are way more forgiving than the stuff your dad used.

Shit, I can barely get my thumbnail out without stabbing myself.
