Vent: my buddy Dave says buying games is the hobby and playing them is optional

Dave came over last week and saw my shelf of 60 plus games and asked how many I'd actually played this year. I said maybe 12, and he shrugged and told me the collecting part is just as real a hobby as the playing part, and honestly that bugged me more than it should have. Half of me thinks he's right, since nobody tells a stamp collector he has to mail letters, but the other half thinks a game in shrink wrap is just cardboard on a shelf. Where do you all land on this, is buying and shelving games a legit hobby on its own or is Dave just making excuses for me?
