The rulebook trick that saved my Gloomhaven campaign

After 8 sessions of flipping back and forth through that massive rulebook for monster movement clarifications, I started color-coding the edges with highlighters for combat, setup, and special conditions. Has anyone else tried a system like that for heavy games?

The color coding thing works because our brains are terrible at scanning walls of text under pressure, same way people color code their work calendars or label their fridge bins. Once you slap a color on the monster AI section your eyes just go straight to that spot without rifling through twenty pages. It saves those awkward three minute pauses where everyone stares at the floor while one person hunts. The real trick is making the colors mean something specific so they actually stick in your memory instead of just looking pretty.

That color coding idea is genius actually. My group just passed session 12 and we still argue about monster focus during line of sight. Did you find the highlighter colors helped with the monster AI flowcharts specifically, or was it more for referencing between battle goals and item effects? We usually have one player stuck on page 17 while the rest of us wait around.
