Game night lasted 14 minutes because of one rulebook line

Last Saturday my group cracked open a new worker placement game and hit a rule about 'adjacent spaces' that turned out to mean diagonal only, which contradicted the diagram on page 6. We argued for 20 minutes, tried it both ways, and then the guy who brought it just packed the box and said 'we'll table this one.' Has anyone else had a single ambiguous sentence kill an entire evening like that?
