TIL I was quenching way too hot for 3 winters, a guy in Tulsa showed me my 5160 was basically butter
Had a blade I'd been proud of snap at a show in Tulsa last fall, and the older smith next to me pointed out my quench oil was over 200 degrees when it should've been around 120 to 130. I'd been going off color the whole time instead of a thermometer, which is why about half my blades were coming out soft. Anyone else learn hardening temps the hard way or am I the only one who skipped that page?
