Showerthought: I thought forge welding was just showing off until I tried it on a rail spike
Always figured guys doing forge welds were just flexing for the camera, that a good rivet or a collared joint was plenty. Then last fall a fella named Darryl at the Hammer-In in Carbondale showed me how to scarf two ends of a rail spike and set the weld in one heat off a coal forge. Took me about 9 tries at my own fire before one held, and now I've got a bottle opener that's one solid piece instead of two. Any of you run into a joint you were sure was overkill until you actually needed it?
