Rant: stop telling new guys to buy a 50 lb anvil first
Every new smith I meet in the shop keeps getting told online to buy the biggest anvil they can afford, then they end up with a 50 lb cast piece that walks across the bench on every hit. I ran a 12 lb sledge on a 3 foot bar for two hours on a 150 lb Fisher last week and it never moved a hair, because mass and a proper stump matter way more than the number alone. Why is everyone so quick to tell beginners to spend $400 on weight before they even learn to set a stump?
