Picked a coal forge over propane for my first setup, and I regret it every winter
When I got my first shop going in Boise 3 years ago I had $600 to spend and it came down to a propane forge or a coal forge plus a hand crank blower. I went coal because the old guys at the local meetup said you learn heat control better, which is true, but nobody mentioned hauling 50 lb bags of bituminous and fighting clinker every 2 hours. My neighbor called the city twice about the smoke and I have burned through 3 chimney sections in 2 years. If you had a small shop and a picky neighborhood, would you eat the cost and switch to propane or stick it out with coal?
