My old shop teacher said to never quench 5160 in water, and 12 years later a guy at a hammer-in proved him right
Back in high school shop class in 2011 my teacher Mr. Bodine drilled it into us that 5160 goes in oil, never water, or it'll crack on you. I figured he was just being careful so I tried water anyway on a small test blade about 6 inches long, and it snapped in two right at the quench line before I even got it to the tempering oven. Fast forward to a hammer-in in Ohio two weekends ago and a guy named Dale was doing a demo on truck leaf springs, said the same thing, oil only, and showed us three cracked water quenched pieces he'd kept as a reminder. I still have that broken test blade in my scrap bucket and I look at it whenever I think about cutting corners. Curious what you all run for 5160, do you go straight oil or mess with warm water at all?
