Appreciation post: the day my old mentor caught me quenching the wrong end of a railroad spike knife
I was three spikes into a set of knives at my shop in Tulsa last fall and feeling pretty good about my heat treating. My mentor stopped by, watched me for maybe 30 seconds, and asked why I was dunking the tip first every single time. Turns out I'd been quenching tip-down since I started years ago, which was putting a hard edge on the spine and leaving the actual cutting edge soft. He had me flip the spike and go edge-first into the oil, and the file test on the next one told me everything I needed to know. Any of you ever had someone watch you work for half a minute and undo years of a bad habit?
