My buddy's 3-episode rule finally clicked for me
My friend Dave kept telling me to give shows until episode 3 before giving up. I always bailed after one or two if the pilot felt slow. Last week I pushed through the first two episodes of a British crime drama even though I was bored, and by episode 3 the whole story shifted and I binged the rest in one night. He's been right like 4 times now with this rule. Anyone else had a show that only got good after a few episodes?

Dave's rule has saved me at least three times too, but I've got a twist on it. I give a show until episode 3 unless the first episode is actively bad, like bad acting or a plot that makes no sense. That British crime drama you mentioned sounds familiar, probably one of those slow burn ones where they dump all the character setup early. Once you hit that third episode and the case or the mystery opens up, it's a whole different show. I've actually started telling people to skip the first two episodes of certain shows and start on three, then go back if they're hooked.
