Snapped a derailleur hanger on a group ride in Nashville, still not sure what happened

Last Saturday I was about 20 miles into a 50 mile group ride near the Percy Warner loop when I shifted down on a rolling hill and felt this nasty pop. Looked down and the hanger was bent clean backwards, chain wedged between the cage and the spokes. I walked about a mile to my car since nobody had a spare for my frame, and it took 45 minutes with a hex key and a lot of swearing to get the bolt out. Has anyone else had a hanger fail without any obvious hit or crash? I'm wondering if fatigue from old torque might be the real issue.

Derailleur hangers are like those little plastic clips in your car that hold the trunk liner up. They always snap at the worst possible time, not when you're being gentle. Probably got a tiny ding on some Nashville pothole weeks ago and it just waited until you were mid-shift to give up. Same thing happens with my phone charger cord, works fine for months then one day it just refuses to bend anymore. Old torque and micro cracks build up slow, and then one normal pedal stroke is the last straw.
