Finally got the old Schwinn Paramount's headset to stop binding after three tries

It was a choice between trying to polish the old races with a dremel or just buying a new Tange Levin headset. I went with the polish job, using a 600 grit flap wheel and a ton of grease. The bike shifts smooth as butter now, no more of that stiff spot at 11 o'clock. Anyone have a better method for salvaging old cup and cone headsets?

Polishing with a dremel is the true test of a bike mechanic's patience. You either end up with a perfect headset or you create a new part that looks like modern art. My own attempts usually end with me just staring at the new headset listing online. At least you had the good sense to use a ton of grease, that's the real secret.

My buddy tried that last week and legit turned his stem into a weird shiny mushroom. He's still trying to figure out if it's a fail or a feature.
