Bike shop in Tucson flipped my opinion on used parts

I stopped into a small shop near the university last Tuesday looking for a cheap derailleur hanger. The owner pulled one off a bin of take-offs, cleaned it with a wire brush, and checked the alignment on a gauge for like 3 minutes. Honestly, I always figured used parts were a gamble, but watching him test every piece before selling it for $8 changed my mind. He said most shops toss these because they won't bother with the time, so now I'm wondering where else folks find shops that actually prep used gear like that. Has anyone else run into a place that goes that far with secondhand parts?

Wait, he actually put it on an alignment gauge for a part he was selling for $8? That blows my mind. Most shops near me won't even look at you for under $20, let alone spend three minutes checking a cheap hanger. The fact that he dug through a take-off bin and cleaned it up first is wild to me. That guy clearly cares more about doing it right than making a quick buck, which is rare these days.
