Heard a kid at the checkout explain why he uses cash now
Was in line at the Aldi on Broadway last Tuesday and this teenager tells his mom that using cash makes him feel the money leave, so he spends less on snacks. That hit me because I remember my dad doing the same thing back in the 90s, pulling out exact bills for groceries. I switched my weekly food budget to cash about 6 months ago, $80 every Monday, and I'm actually saving closer to $15 a week just because I hesitate more. Cards and apps make it too easy to tap without thinking, at least for me. Anyone else find that old-school envelope method still works better than any budgeting app they've tried?
Watched my buddy do the same thing with a mason jar for gas money. He'd pull out like $30 in fives every Sunday, stuff it in the console, and that was it for the week. The second he started paying at the pump with his phone he was buying energy drinks and beef jerky every single stop. Something about physically handing over bills just makes your brain go nope. Cash back apps and rewards points got nothing on the awkward pause of digging for exact change.
