Why does nobody talk about how bottom watering fixes fungus gnats for good

I spent 3 months watering my balcony tomatoes from the top like a normal person. Every time I moved a pot, gnats would swarm up like crazy. I tried yellow sticky traps, cinnamon, even let the soil dry out completely but nothing worked. Then my neighbor in apartment 4B told me she only waters from the bottom using a tray. I switched to pouring water into the saucers under my 5-gallon pots and within two weeks the gnats were almost gone. The top soil stays dry so the larvae can't survive there anymore. Now my pepper plants are doing better too because the roots grow deeper to reach the water. Has anyone else noticed their soil stays healthier with this method?

Funny how switching to the hard way fixes so many things.
