Question about those fancy silicone baking mats - are they worth it or a total scam?
I dropped $35 on a set of Silpat mats last month thinking they'd save me on parchment paper forever. First batch of cookies stuck to them so bad I had to soak the mats for an hour. My friend swears by hers but she only uses them for roasting veggies not cookies. Did I get a bad batch or am I just using them wrong? Has anyone else wasted money on kitchen gadgets that just dont work as advertised?

Oh man, I feel your pain so much. Ngl, I bought that exact same set and had the exact same experience with cookies. Honestly, I was so pissed I almost threw them in the trash. The first time I used mine for chocolate chip cookies, they spread out like pancakes and left a greasy residue that took forever to scrub off. I thought I was doing something wrong too, but turns out those mats just aren't great for cookies unless you grease them first, which defeats the whole point. Tbh I've wasted way more money on dumb stuff like a garlic press that broke after three uses and a spiralizer that took up too much cabinet space.

I used to swear by silicone mats for everything, thought parchment paper was a waste. But your experience lines up with what I finally had to admit after burning a batch of sugar cookies that stuck to the mat like glue. The cleanup was awful, and after about a dozen uses the surface started getting this weird tacky feel. I still use the mats for roasting vegetables where they work fine, but for cookies I went back to parchment paper and haven't looked back. That greasy residue you mentioned is real, and no amount of scrubbing gets it off completely.
