My oven died mid-birthday cake so I finished it on the grill and it was the best one yet
Had a 9 inch funfetti cake in the oven when the heating element just quit on me, so I covered the pan in foil and threw it on the gas grill at 350 for about 25 minutes with the lid down. The edges got a little smoky but the crumb was perfect and nobody at the party could tell the difference. Is grill baking a real thing people do or did I just get lucky?
My uncle used to bake pies on his pellet smoker and swore by it. The smoke flavor actually works with certain desserts, guess it makes sense a grill would pull it off too.
Guessing the birthday gods just smiled on you that day because a grill is basically an oven with a bad attitude. @craig.parker your uncle baking pies on a pellet smoker is a whole different level of brave, I would've bet money that ends in tears. Foil over a cake pan on a gas grill with the lid down is about as close to a real oven as you can fake, so the 350 for 25 minutes part checks out. The smoke on the edges probably helped more than it hurt, funfetti is sweet enough that a little char just cuts through it. Next time your oven quits, just tell everyone you meant to do it.
