PSA: I switched from a digital scale to a mechanical one for my sourdough starter
I got tired of the battery dying mid-feed and bought a 5-pound capacity mechanical scale from a local kitchen supply store in Cincinnati. My starter's activity actually feels more consistent now, maybe because I'm not overthinking the grams. Anyone else ditch the digital readout for something simpler?

The little mental math of converting grams to ounces actually gets you more in tune with the feel of the dough. Forces you to pay attention instead of just staring at a number.

My old mechanical scale from a thrift shop lasted ten years.

That's the beauty of older mechanical stuff, no planned obsolescence built in. They were made to be fixed, not thrown away. Makes you wonder what else we're tossing out that could last.
