The VHS era of bad movies had a charm streaming just cant match
I was digging through a box at my parents place last weekend and found a bunch of old tapes from the late 90s, stuff like Troll 2 and Miami Connection. Popped one in my old combo player and it hit me how different the whole experience was back then. You had to rewind, deal with tracking lines, and the picture was fuzzy, but that almost made it better. The commercials and the weird local rental store stickers felt like part of the ritual, you know? Now I can pull up the same movie on my phone in 4K and it just feels too clean, like it lost some of its soul. The imperfections forced you to laugh together with friends, not just scroll past to the next thing. Does anyone else feel like the bad movie night magic faded when we lost the physical media? Or am I just getting old and nostalgic for the wrong reasons?
Remember when you'd grab a tape off the shelf and the cover art alone sold you? The fuzzy picture and tracking lines kind of forced you to pay attention in a way, since you could not just skip ahead or scroll to something else. Grab a few of those tapes and a cheap combo player off eBay, because that ritual is worth keeping alive if it still makes you laugh.
